1st session

First session- My memories drawn and Kieran Lyons' exhibition

In the first session of this module we have done a few team building exercises.

We were divided in groups of 2 and were asked to draw:

  1. our very first memory
  2. what comes into our minds when we think of walking to school
  3. our bedside table (what we remember to have left on it before leaving home)
  4. our ideal home
After finishing each drawing, we had to explain to our partner what our drawing means and this way, start interacting and build rapport.

After the last exercise, we were asked to move to someone else's drawing and have an input into their ideal home, i.e. include elements of our ideal home into their ideal home.

Here are the samples of my drawings.

My first memory - me and my parents getting back from a holiday at 4am and going straight to my grandparents house. This was the hug my Granddad gave me at that time in the morning.

Memory from my way to school - I used to always go under an archway  on my way to school.

Most recent memory - what I remember to have left  on my bedside table - a lamp, a nail varnish bottle and a scrunchy.

This is my idea of an ideal home: round shaped, glass walled, house, on a beach, with a swing in the back yard. Someone else added extra "features" to my drawing, and they are the palm tree, the bath tub/pot flying towards the window and the bird on top of my swing.

During this session we have also visited the exhibition of  Kieran Lyons at Plymouth University Gallery and found it quote interesting how this artist has used machine made drawing for a period of many years, starting from the 1960's and up to 2012. The experiments he has made are quite interesting especially because I have never thought of drawing in this way before. So this was a complete mind opener for me.

This is one of the experiments he did, using a machine set up on  a train and the lines  are achieved by  sending the machine on a return trip from Stoke to another station.
